In 1987, HIA formed the Scavenger Hotline for donated furnishing for its philanthropy committee. This grew to become Philanthropy Be Design (PBD) to create inspiring interiors for community, PBD has participated in the refurbishment of over 100 projects around the Bay area. This innovative organization coordinates donations for HIA members and businesses which can receive tax-deductible receipts.
Projects include Episcopal Sanctuary, Canon Kip House, Project Open Hand,
Diamond Senior Center, Maitre AIDS Hospice, TNDC-Civic Center Residence,
St. Mary’s
Adolescent Psychiatric Unit, Bay Area Crisis Nursery, Asian Women's Shelter,
Alternative Family SErvices, just to name a few. Over $3 million in products
and services have been donated for these worthy projects.
PBD has been recognized with the 1990 ASID Design for Humanity Award, President Bush’s 1991 Points of Light Award, the 1996 J.C. Penny Golden Rule Award, and has been featured in many local and national publications. Grants from the SF Recycling Program have enables PBD to expand the number of agencies served by redirecting over 104 tons of unwanted ye still usable items from landfill to social services facilities.
